Early life
Charlyne Yi was raised in Fontana, California; her mother has Spanish Filipino ancestry and her father is of Korean, Irish, German, French and Native American descent. Before leaving to pursue a full-time career in comedy, she attended the University of California, Riverside. She attended Bloomington High School and was involved in theaters, She had an early interest in performing.
Career
Charlyne Yi began performing in Bloomington, California. After high school, Charlyne Yi performed shows at The Steve Allen Theater in Los Angeles, and the Honest Citizens Brigade Theater. She performed in the New York Comedy Festival in 2005 and 2006, HBO’s U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado in 2007. Jude Apatow’s 2007 film Knocked Up was debut for Charlyne Yi. Charlyne Yi performed at the Just for Laughs Festival in 2008 at Montreal part of the Apatow Destruction live comedy show.
Yi executive produced in addition to co-writing in the film 2009 Paper Heart, ”a hybrid documentary”, She starred as a fictional version of herself, along with Michael Cera.
For 2009, he was chosen as one of Venus Zine’s ”25 under 25”.
Charlyne Yi and Paul Rust formed The Glass Beef. The two share an electric guitar and both lead singers.
